Why We Named Our Cyprus Studio MALAKA

Malaka is the friendliest word in Greek, and the rudest. Here is why a Larnaca web and app studio put it on the door, and what it promises our clients.

MALAKA is a web and app development studio in Larnaca, Cyprus, and a brand of SALTPIXEL Ltd. We named it after the best-known word in everyday Greek and Cypriot speech, on purpose. This is why.

What does “malaka” mean?

Malaka (μαλάκα, said “MA-la-ka”) has two lives. Between friends it is an affectionate “mate” or “buddy”: “Ela, malaka!” means “Come on, mate!”. Said to a stranger in anger, or in the wrong tone, it is an insult.

The word comes from the ancient Greek malakós, meaning “soft”. Over the centuries it picked up its rough meaning, and in Cyprus and Greece today you will hear both versions in the same afternoon, often from the same person.

Is it a bad word?

It can be. Among friends it is warm and ordinary. Shouted across a car park, it is rude. That double meaning is exactly why we chose it, because digital work is the same. With the right people, an agency is a real help to a business. With the wrong people, it becomes a hole that eats money and delivers excuses.

Three reasons we put it on the door

1. We want clients to feel they are talking to a friend

“Malaka” is the friendliest word in Greek when it is said the right way. We want the people we work with to feel they are talking to someone on their side, not to a corporation with a ticket system.

2. It is a promise to speak plainly

Friends don’t hide behind jargon. Every quote, report and proposal we write is meant to be understood by the business owner, not only by their IT person. If you hear a word from us that you don’t know, ask. That is part of the job.

3. It reminds us to earn the friendly meaning every day

A name like this only works if we deserve the good version of it. Missed deadlines and surprise invoices are how an agency earns the other meaning. The name keeps us honest.

Who is behind MALAKA?

MALAKA is part of the Saltpixel Family: two Cyprus brands run by one team under SALTPIXEL Ltd (reg. no. HE 484960), based in Livadia, Larnaca.

Whichever brand you work with, the contract, invoices and guarantees are with the same Cyprus-registered company. You can read more on our About page.

Questions people ask us about the name

Do Cypriot clients find the name offensive?

Most smile, because they hear the friendly version first. The ones who hesitate usually ask why, and that conversation is a good start: it tells them straight away how we talk.

Is MALAKA a separate company from eMarketing Cyprus?

No. Both are brands of SALTPIXEL Ltd, with one team behind them. eMarketing Cyprus focuses on marketing and WordPress; MALAKA focuses on custom software, apps and AI.

Can we talk to you in Greek?

Yes. We work in Greek and English every day, and we build websites, apps and AI assistants in Greek, English, Russian, German and other languages.

Have a project in mind? Get an instant, human-checked price or talk to a person. Ela, malaka.
